Stretcher. The wooden frame over which the canvas of a painting is stretched on. It is constituted by wooden bars, usually made of pine. The edge of the canvas is generally stretched to the frame with staples, and the size of the stretcher can be changed slightly through the adjustment of small expansion wedges at the corners.
