Etching. An illustration made by drawing with a needle through an acid-resistant material (such as wax) covering on a metal plate. The plate is then submerged in a series of acid baths to eat away (etch) the metal where it has been uncovered, creating depressed lines that are later inked for printing. It also refers the process of creating such an illustration.
