Francesc Mateu (1946-2009) was born in Barcelona, Spain. He always had a pencil in his hand. As a normal consequence of this, as soon as he finished school, Francesc started working as apprentice in several companies that were related somehow to drawing: publishing and advertising companies, and graphic art workshops. Very soon, he was on his way as an illustrator artist.

Francesc Mateu won commissions from all the major children companies, such as Disney. Due to the huge amount of commissions he was getting from the American market, he even had to change his residence to New York in 1989.

In 1997, after eight years in the US, he returned to live in a town nearby Barcelona. From Sabadell, where he lived till the end of his life, he continued illustrating the children books that have made him one of the foremost licensing artists of the World.

Francesc Mateu always devoted part of his time to the making of fine art watercolors, his great passion besides cartooning.

Francesc Mateu, 'Cesc' for all of his friends, died in Sabadell on October 2nd, 2009. Among other projects, he was working on the making of the Colorland illustrations. The most and best children's art on this site should be attributed to his pencil.
